Your website probably isn’t lying on purpose. But there’s a good chance it isn’t telling the whole truth, either. Businesses change constantly. Employees come and go. Services evolve. Hours change. Service areas expand. New projects are completed. Yet the website often stays exactly the same. Eventually, potential customers end up meeting an outdated version of your business before they ever meet you.

As we head into 2027, now is a great time to ask: Does your website accurately represent the business you are today?

Start With Your Services

Take a look at what your website says you do. Are those still your most important services? Have you added something new? Are you promoting something you barely offer anymore? Your website should make it immediately clear what you do, who you help, and where you work. Accurate, detailed service information is also important for SEO. Search engines and AI-powered search tools need clear information to understand when your business is relevant to someone’s search.

Check the Basics

Some of the most important website updates are also the easiest to overlook.

Check your:

  • Business hours
  • Phone numbers and email addresses
  • Staff and job titles
  • Locations and service areas
  • Contact forms
  • Social media links
  • Pricing or fee information
  • PDFs, applications and downloadable forms

Then compare important business information with your Google Business Profile and other online listings. If your website says one thing and Google says another, customers are left wondering which one is correct.

Look at Your Photos and Projects

Does your website actually look like your business today? Old branding, former employees, outdated equipment and ten-year-old project photos can make an active business look like it hasn’t done much lately. Add recent projects, updated team photos, current equipment and real examples of your work. This doesn’t just make your website look better. It builds trust. Potential customers want proof that you’re actively doing the work you say you do.

Answer Today’s Customer Questions

Think about the questions customers ask you repeatedly.

  • Do you serve my area?
  • How much does this cost?
  • How long does it take?
  • What happens after I contact you?

If you’re answering the same questions every week, your website should probably be answering them, too. Adding FAQs makes your website more useful to customers and gives search engines more context about your business.

Does Your Homepage Still Describe You?

Finally, visit your homepage and pretend you’ve never heard of your company. Within a few seconds, can you tell:

  • What does this business do?
  • Where does it work?
  • Why should I trust it?
  • What should I do next?

If not, it may be time for an update.

And that doesn’t automatically mean you need an entirely new website. Sometimes updated content, better photos, stronger service pages, improved SEO and clearer calls to action can make a huge difference.

Give Your Website a Year-End Checkup

Before heading into 2027, spend 15 minutes reviewing your website. Your business has probably changed this year. Your website should change with it. Keeping your site accurate isn’t just good website maintenance. It helps customers trust you, helps search engines understand your business, and makes sure the people finding you online are seeing the company you actually are today.

At Simple Wolf, I help small businesses, municipalities, nonprofits and organizations throughout North Dakota and beyond keep their websites current, useful and easy to navigate. So, take another look at yours.
