If you’ve ever hit January and thought, “I should really post something…” but had no idea what, or where to start, you’re not alone.
Whether you run a small-town business, offer services, or manage a nonprofit, content planning can feel like one more thing on your list. But here’s the good news: December is the perfect time to do a little prep work so your Q1 marketing doesn’t feel like a scramble.
A few simple steps now can save you time, stress, and the weekly “what do I post?” spiral later.
December tends to be a slower time for some service-based businesses (in between holidays, year-end wrap-up, and waiting on January projects to kick off). It’s a great time to:
- Look at what worked this year
- Map out seasonal promotions or events
- Plan content themes around what your customers need in the new year
- Batch ideas while you’ve got a minute to breathe
Planning ahead doesn’t mean locking yourself into a rigid calendar, it just gives you a clear starting point when things get busy again.
What You Can Plan Now
Here’s what I recommend tackling this month:
1. Identify Your Q1 Priorities: What’s happening in your business in January–March?
- A winter service or product launch?
- Seasonal promotions or events?
- Annual enrollment, scheduling, or tax season deadlines?
Once you know what you’re offering, you’ll know what kind of content to focus on.
2. Pick 2–4 Content Themes: These can guide your emails, blog posts, and social media for the next few months. Think simple, helpful, and customer-focused.
Examples:
- “How to prepare your home/business for winter”
- “Common questions about [your service]”
- “Meet the team / behind the scenes”
- “What to expect when working with us”
Tip: Repeating a few themes throughout the season makes your marketing more consistent (and easier to plan).
3. Sketch Out a Simple Calendar: You don’t need a fancy system, just open a Google Doc or calendar and plug in 1–2 ideas per week or month.
Start with:
- Social media post topics
- Email newsletter ideas
- Blog post headlines or FAQs
- Promotions tied to key dates (Valentine’s Day, spring events, etc.)
Tip: Even writing “Week 2: Post about scheduling tax prep” helps reduce mental load later.
