When most people think about websites, they picture the layout or the photos, but what’s written on your site plays a huge role in how it performs. Search engines like Google don’t just look at your design, they scan your words. If your homepage, services, and even photo captions are missing key phrases, you’re probably not showing up where your ideal customers are searching.

This is especially important for small-town businesses and city websites, where the competition isn’t huge, but showing up first still makes a big difference.

What Makes a Website “Searchable”?

A searchable website includes the kinds of words and phrases people are actually typing into Google. For example, someone looking for your services might search for:

  • “Roofing contractor in Lisbon ND”
  • “Affordable daycare near Oakes”
  • “City council meeting minutes Ellendale, ND”

If your website includes that kind of language, naturally and clearly, it becomes easier for search engines to recommend your site to the right people.

Where to Add Search-Friendly Content

Strong SEO doesn’t mean cramming in a bunch of keywords. It means being specific and helpful in a few key places:

  • Homepage headlines and intro text
  • Service or product descriptions
  • About pages that include your location and who you serve
  • Image alt text and file names
  • Page titles and meta descriptions (behind the scenes, but powerful)

An Example: What NOT to Do vs. What Works

Instead of writing: “We offer high-quality service at competitive rates.”

Try something more specific, like: “Our Ellendale-based team offers custom website design, logo creation, and marketing for small-town businesses across North Dakota.”

That sentence includes location, services, and target audience, everything a search engine (and your next customer) needs to know.

Clear wording helps people understand what you do, where you are, and how to take the next step. If someone lands on your site and can’t quickly tell what you offer or where you’re located, they’ll click away.

If your website is outdated or missing keywords that matter to your audience, it might be time for a quick homepage refresh. This is something I offer for small businesses and cities who want to clean up their site and start getting better traffic, all without rebuilding from scratch.

Let’s make sure your words are working for you.
